The Italian Style, part 1

A lot of people with various degrees of sartorial inclination refer to the Italian style in various situation when discussing clothing and styling in general. And why shouldn’t they; I think most of us can agree that there are a lot of Italian men with really great style. In a series of articles I am going to discuss what the Italian style is really about and give my view on how you can achieve the same thing.

So without any further ado, let’s get on with it.

What is the Italian style really about

A lot of men with money to spend like to spend them on Italian suits, shirts and accessories and think that will give them the same flair that they see when looking at some Italian style icon. And while in my opinion the Neapolitan tailoring is among the worlds finest, I don’t think this is what Italian style is about. Read the rest of this entry »

The grey flannel trousers

Today a new series of articles are starting here on Style Review. In this series we will talk about the different styles of men trousers that are out there. As fall is soon upon us, at least here in Sweden, the grey flannel trousers is a great starting point.

grey flannel trousersNow, a favorite part of autumn for me is the fact that I can start wearing flannels again. To me, in many ways, they are the perfect pair of pants. First of all, they are, or should be, grey. Grey is a superb color for trousers for the simple fact that grey goes great together with just about anything else.

Brown or black shoes, a navy blazer, a sport coat, a cardigan, you name it. With the navy blazer, black shoes, a white shirt and a club tie you will look almost as formal as a man in suit, while combined with a pair of brown monk straps, a glen checked sports coat and a striped unbuttoned shirt you have your perfect business casual attire right there, while still looking miles better than your colleague in chinos and shirt.

You see, pants should never stick out. Rather, they should bring peoples attention as quickly as possible to your well polished shoes or your sport coat ensemble. This role is fulfilled perfectly by a pair of grey flannels.

The flannel fabric, made from Merino wool is soft and almost feels fuzzy to the touch. They wear warm and thus are perfect for fall, winter and early spring. And as easily as they combine with any blazer or sport coat they work without it. Like I said, combine them with a cardigan, rugby shirt, or turtle neck and don a casual jacket and you sill still look great for any casual situation, and miles ahead of anyone in some jeans combination.

Buying your grey flannel trousers

grey flannel trousers

Things to consider when buying a pair of grey flannel trousers. First of all, make sure they are in a pretty dark color. To light grey and they will be harder to combine and will look a bit odd in fall and winter. Make sure they fit you, but they should not be a skinny or slim fit. The rise (how high the waist is) should be quite generous, and for most men pleats are preferable.

I personally prefer mine with cuffs, which give them a bit more of a rustic look while helping them maintain a great line. Also, I prefer to wear mine with suspenders, so look for a pair of grey flannel trousers which have suspender buttons sewn in, or just take them to your tailor. Read the rest of this entry »

Get your Bose® QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling® Headphones NEWEST MODEL now!

Lets start with the most important aspect of any sound device first: How do the Bose Quietcomfort headphones sound? Simply put fantastic. You will be able to pick up details in music that you never heard before. The sound is accurate and very detailed, and while it may not appeal to people who enjoy over the top thumping base they do provide a much more realistic and natural experience. Bose qc 15 review.

Stereo imaging is absolutely fantastic and you’ll be easily able to pinpoint where every performer is placed on stage if the recording is good.

bose quietcomfort 15 reviewNoise cancelation is the big selling point of these headphones. If your ears work anything like mine you will be simply amazed with this feature. I work in an open office landscape and before getting these I have tried any conceivable method of shutting out outside noise.

With the Bose Quietcomfort 15 however, disturbing noises is a thing of the past. Even if you play music at very low volumes you will not hear people talking or other disturbances so you won’t have to blast yourself deaf with them. As I do quite a lot of air travel in my work these have been a godsend as well, and now I can’t imagine not having them on a flight. You should be aware that there is a slight underwater like feeling in your ears with noise canceling engaged, sort of like being underwater. I didn’t mind this, however some of you may. If you buy your pair from the links here however you are able to try them out for a full 30 days and return them if you are not satisfied. To me, this sensation beat earplugs or in-ear phones any day since I find things stuffed inside my ears very uncomfortable.

This works by the headphones having microphones which will pick up outside noises and play them back with the phase of the sound reversed intermixed with your music, effectively negating those sounds.

Bose quietcomfort 15 review – build quality and comfort

As you would expect from a quality Bose product build quality is excellent in every detail. The carrying case is a great feature for those traveling with the phones, meaning you can stuff them in a bag without worrying about breaking them. Sure, it’s not as compact as in-ear phones, but the Bose Quietcomfort 15 folds into the case making for a box about the size of a CD-case and slightly fatter. Small details such as the detachable cord makes the fact that if you don’t want to listen to anything, but still want to reduce noise you can wear the phones without attaching the cord, and the noise cancellation feature will still work.

Also included is an airplane connector so you can easily hook them up if you want to watch the on-flight movie and such.

The one drawback of the Bose Quietcomfort 15 is that if your batteries runs flat you can’t use them at all, even without the noise canceling feature. Battery life however is really good, so it shouldn’t be a problem most of the time. This isn’t the only Bose quietcomfort 15 review online that finds them a great buy.

Not that this is the new, updated model, and you still will get them at a low price of $299.95 with free shipping if you order right now using the link below. The free shipping deal however is an offer that will expire shortly, so make sure you take advantage of it right now.

Navy Blazer

Few items in a mans closet is as useful in so many different situations as a navy blazer. More formal than a sport coat while still less formal than a suit, combined with the correct accessories it will be of use often.

The navy blazer evolved from military uniforms, and originally was always double breasted with brass buttons, which still is the choice for the more traditional man. Today however, there are several different types of blazers which all serve a purpose and I will list a number of common types here and also provide some ideas for getting one for yourself.

The Double Breasted Navy Blazer

As mentioned above, this type of blazer is the most traditional kind. This does not mean however that only old men can wear them to the golf club. Get it in a sleek fit and match with well tailored light colored pants and brown monk strap shoes and you will find the flattering slimming effect of the double breasted style makes you look great.

If you would like to get a really great double breasted blazer for yourself I have to tell you about this great item from Jos. A. Bank. It’s a steal right now at $425 which is about half of what you should normally expect to pay for one of these.

This is a really traditional blazer with brass buttons, in a soft cut, with natural shoulders for a great italian look. Made from 100s wool it is a perfect cloth for year round use and it will stand up to the test of time better than lighter cloths used for pure summer clothing. If i didn’t already own a great double breasted blazer I wouldn’t think twice about getting this one!

 The Single Breasted Navy Blazer

However great the double breasted blazer is, sometimes it may just be to formal. For a more flexible option, which can be worn very casually with jeans and sneakers or dressed up with dress pants, tie and oxford shoes the single breasted navy blazer is the way to go. Still in a traditional color and still with brass buttons, but with the often more modern look a single breast gives a coat this may turn out to be the single most used garment in your wardrobe. When it comes to single breasted coats of any kind however, every gentleman has to make a choice between two or three buttons.

There’s not really a right or wrong answer when making this choice; get whatever you like and what looks best on you. Make sure though that regardless of which one you get you make sure not to button the lowest button, which goes for any kind of coat. It just makes you look really clueless.

Jos. A. Banks of course has great single breasted navy blazers as well, both three and two buttoned.

This signature blazer has a more tailored shoulder than the double breasted above, giving a stronger shoulder line, while it has some waist suppression, which combined will give you more of an athletic/hour glass figure. Pick stitching adds to the exclusive feel of these blazers, and the wool is top notch.

Why style matters

So why should anyone bother spending time, effort and a not insignificant amount of money on the way we look? Isn’t what’s on the inside what really matters? Isn’t archaic style rules a thing of the past, where we in out modern and individualistic world should wear whatever we like whenever we like? Why style matters is a question every man of style needs to answer from time to time and I will try to discuss in a couple of paragraphs why style matters to me, and why it should to you as well.

First of all, let’s get rid of some misconceptions. Style is not about wearing some kind of suit uniform. It not about dressing like your grand dad, unless of course he happened to be a particularly stylish gentleman. Style is about using hundreds of years of knowledge about what does and does not look good in a certain combination and in a certain situation, being aware of the importance of fit, using good color and texture combinations and, maybe most important, understand when to break these rules to find a personal and unique style that compliments your physique, your complexion and projects the image that you want to people you meet.

So why is this important. Like I asked in the first paragraph, can’t we just go on wearing whatever is comfortable etc? Well, first of all, whether we like it or not, how we look does make an objective difference in how we are perceived. Numerous studies has found that how a person looks plays a major part in how we asses him or her, and first impressions are important in a lot of situations. Sure, if you never meet people, or are in a position where you don’t need to care about what people you meet think about you, go ahead and dress however you like. For most people however, dressing sloppily or bad puts them at a distinct disadvantage in areas such as professionally, dating, negotiations etc.

Apart from the image of yourself given to other people, another important aspect of being stylish is that it improves self esteem. It’s hard to put words on it, but when you know that you look your best, and that your dress is appropriate it simply makes you feel very good about yourself. This of course shows making you look even better, it’s a case of positive reinforcement.

On a final note. A lot of people thinks it’s really expensive to dress nicely. That is however mostly a misconception. Yes, a great suit, a pair of superior shoes or a really nice shirt costs a lot of money. However, by finding and applying your style rather than following the nicks of fashion you will find that you will never again have to get rid of a garment because it’s out of fashion. Style is forever. Adding to this is the fact that that really expensive suit is expensive for a reason other than label: It’s made to last. Good quality clothing and shoes lasts at least a decade, meaning that those $500 shoes really is only $50 a year.

This all is why style matters

There will be more discussion on this subject in future posts, where we will also get into details of construction of clothes and shoes, different schools of style, correct fitting, and colors.

Glad to have you onboard!
